چکیده

The classic algorithm of Viterbi computes the most likely path in a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) that results in a given sequence of observations. It runs in time O(Tn) given a sequence of T observations from a HMM with n states. Despite significant interest in the problem and prolonged effort by different communities, no known algorithm achieves more than a polylogarithmic speedup. In this paper, we explain this difficulty by providing matching conditional lower bounds. We show that the Viterbi algorithm runtime is optimal up to subpolynomial factors even when the number of distinct observations is small. Our lower bounds are based on assumptions that the best known algorithms for the All-Pairs Shortest Paths problem (APSP) and for the Max-Weight k-Clique problem in edgeweighted graphs are essentially tight. Finally, using a recent algorithm by Green Larsen and Williams for online Boolean matrix-vector multiplication, we get a 2 √ log n) speedup for the Viterbi algorithm when there are few distinct transition probabilities in the HMM.

Improving Viterbi is Hard: Better Runtimes Imply Faster Clique Algorithms A. Hardness of VITERBI PATH with small alphabet: Proof

We will perform a reduction from the MIN-WEIGHT k-CLIQUE problem for k = p+ 2 to the VITERBI PATH problem. In the instance of the MIN-WEIGHT k-CLIQUE problem, we are given a k-partite graphG = (V1∪V2∪U1 . . .∪Up, E) such that |V1| = |V2| = n and |U1| = . . . = |Up| = m = Θ(n). We want to find a clique of minimum weight in the graph G. Before describing our final VITERBI PATH instance, we first ...

Fast Algorithms for the Maximum Clique Problem on Massive Graphs with Applications to Overlapping Community Detection

The maximum clique problem is a well known NP-Hard problem with applications in data mining, network analysis, information retrieval and many other areas related to the World Wide Web. There exist several algorithms for the problem with acceptable runtimes for certain classes of graphs, but many of them are infeasible for massive graphs. We present a new exact algorithm that employs novel pruni...

Improving the Maximum-Weight Clique Algorithm for the Dense Graphs

In this paper we present a fast algorithm for the maximum-weight clique problem on arbitrary undirected graphs, which is improved for the dense graphs. The algorithm uses colour classes and backtracking techniques inside itself in parallel in a form of a branch and bound algorithm. The algorithm contains also several improvements for the most complex case, which are dense graphs. Computational ...
